BOOKSTORE STORY

The Story of The Entrance Bookstore

The Entrance Bookstore opened in 2020, located at No. 34 Wudaoying Hutong, Beijing. Named “Estuary” (入海口), the hope is that every friend who walks through the door is like entering an unknown sea of thought from an estuary into the ocean, with the books in the shop providing rich nourishment for the soul.

A line is written on the glass window: “This hutong is nice, and it would be even nicer with a bookstore.” Because if there’s a bookstore in this hutong that gathers visitors from all over the world, then everyone who walks in has one more possibility of encountering a book they’ll love.

Browsing a bookstore is a very special experience; you discover that there are so many things you haven’t yet had time to know.

But this isn’t even the most fun part of browsing a bookstore, though it’s quite efficient for broadening the boundaries of knowledge. What’s more interesting is that when you’re in a bookstore, wherever your eyes land, wherever your fingers reach, everything is there for matching, and it mainly depends on serendipity.

Every day, many questions arise in our minds; don’t say you don’t have them. But the vast majority of questions have no answers, or we simply never have the time to seek answers. In a bookstore, you’ll occasionally stop suddenly in front of a book, pick it up and flip through it without thinking. Why? Because those questions are matching themselves with the answers in the book. When the serendipity arrives, the book naturally becomes yours.

Every book in the bookstore can be opened and read, making it easy for you to encounter, during a brief rest, the book that might just resolve your current perplexity, letting everything happen in random fluctuation.

The space is enveloped in Klein Blue. At the [Entrance], new books and themed exhibitions are displayed, easy to browse without pressure; in the [Deep Sea Zone], there are more specialized books, with ocean wave white noise flowing from the speakers, perfect for sitting down to read; the [Shore] is the ordering and checkout counter, with selected creative merchandise nearby for you to choose from and take to farther places.

Because the space is small, we don’t chase bestseller lists when selecting books. We don’t stock “the best-selling,” but rather “what deserves to be encountered by more people.” We regularly host author-themed exhibitions; during the Ted Chiang exhibition, beside the display, it read: “May Ted Chiang always be placed on the bookshelf, quietly waiting for everyone who appreciates him.”

Offline, it’s a free and relaxed reading space; online, the Tidal Coast releases drift bottles, letting knowledge and inspiration flow with the seawater to every corner of the world.
